Mark Wallinger’s Ecce Homo was the first in a series of three commissions by the RSA that aimed to refocus attention on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square, raise awareness of high quality public art, and help resolve the plinth’s future.  The success of the programme led to the decision for an ongoing series of temporary works of art to be commissioned from leading national and international artists for this key central London site. The Mayor of London endorsed this scheme when he took over responsibility for Trafalgar Square in 1999, and the programme is now funded by the Mayor of London and Arts Council England, and is guided and monitored by a panel of specialist advisors – the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group.  It has become Internationally renowned and remains a focus for press and public attention and opinion about public art in the UK.
